FEAR OF ENGLISH

I hope you made the right guess. Yes, it’s English. It is just a language but for many it is a nightmare. A language that has been taught to us from our school days is a nightmare. It is tough to believe but it is a fact.

While taking communication skills training, some of the common problems I heard from students are lack of Confidence, incorrect usage of Grammar, deficiency of Vocabulary, time required in translating to English and above all lack of an Environment. The last one is majorly heard, because nobody in the family speaks in English and none of the friends speak in English either. I bet none of your family or friends speak Mathematics, Science, Social Studies also. And above all, if we lack this language, how come we were able to clear all our exams from primary to Senior Secondary.

The simplest answer is that we are all trained and taught to pass the subjects in examinations. English is not taught to us as a language, it is taught as a subject. If we opt for any foreign language course, I am sure the duration lies between months to few years. However, in case of English, almost all the educational years one spent in school fall short.

Most of us are yet not able to differentiate between Language and Communication. We must understand that Communication can happen in any language including sign language. Thus, language is a medium of communication. Does it suffice that as English is a language, it is also a medium of communication. Trust me, like any other language, English can be learnt.

However, the above might not be required. We do not always need an out of the box solution especially if we can integrate within our primary offerings. We will only have to stop treating a language as a subject. We do not need different mediums of education, rather we need education to develop potential and ability to be able to learn on our own for the rest of our life.

We are in an extensive need of restructuring our Learning System, oops… Teaching System, as we do not follow a Learning System. What we really need is a Learning System. This world needs Learnt resources not Taught resources.
